Ubuntu Logo
The logo says it all really.

This web page is hosted on servers running Linux, my desktop runs Linux, all the computers in the house run Linux.

Why use anything else?

My favourite distribution is Ubuntu, a decision not arrived at lightly - I've tried just about all of them at one time or another, and keep coming right back to Ubuntu.

Go download the ISO file and burn it onto a CD and try it. I can nearly guarantee you'll like it.

At the moment I have an old tower desktop with a twin core AMD chip in it - graphics is by on-board NVidia chip, 1GB RAM, 160MB HDD.

Currently connected to a Linksys Broadband wireless access point by Ethernet lead - although the Linksys internal wireless card does work, I just prefer to use the Ethernet connection for now.

Daughters PC is an Acer One with 8GB flash + additional 8GB SD storage - with an old laptop HDD plugged into a USB port to give an additional 40GB storgae.

The Acer has had its Linpus OS replaced with a straightforward installation of Ubuntu, and its internal wireless connection works just fine. The Linpus OS is fine for beginners, but I'd thoroughly recommend replacing it with Ubuntu - much more usable, customisable, flexible.

One thing about Ubuntu - the default installation seems to assume a fairly powerful computer system. Default settings are for a reasonable degree of fancy graphics which CAN slow the PC unacceptably.

If you have Ubuntu installed and screen updates seem to take an age, look at the System, Preferences, Appearance settings. It should look like this:

Systems Preferences Appearance

If it's blank then the settings are too 'fancy' for your computers power. Click on the bit where the top option should be and hit Enter (Return) to accept the changes. Your desktop should new fly along.
